Veterinary Technician Schools

Veterinary tech schools train interested men and women how to provide many of the same services provided by licensed veterinarians including lab work, clinical procedures and diagnostics. For many people who consider their pets to be family members, it is comforting to know that there are highly-trained veterinary professionals who work alongside veterinarians to deliver state-of-the art veterinary care.

Veterinary Technician Training - Educational Path

Veterinary tech schools prepare students to work with a licensed veterinarian in private practices and pet hospitals, but many opportunities can be found in clinical and governmental research facilities. Many research facilities will require additional certification such as the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science certificate. Attending one of the many accredited veterinary tech schools in the United States provides you with the knowledge and skill set to perform various medical tests, treatments and diagnostics in any of these environments on a wide range of animals.

Most veterinary tech schools offer 2-year programs for technicians and 4-year programs for technologists. Upon completion of the required coursework, graduates will be expected to take a credentialing exam in the state they wish to practice their sills. These exams test the individuals for competency of their chosen field through oral, written, and practical means. Candidates passing these exams receive a registered, licensed or certified designation and can transfer these credentials to any state that uses the same testing procedure.

Veterinary Tech Employment Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for techs trained by veterinary tech schools can expect employment opportunities to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2012.

Veterinary technician schools, programs and career opportunities should be of special interest for anyone who loves pets and seeks a long-term career working with them.
