If you have an interest in science and technology and also like working with people, then consider a career as a dialysis technician. You'll not only earn a competitive wage but also save lives. Under the supervision of a registered nephrology nurse, Dialysis technicians operate hemodialysis machines and perform dialysis on patients with acute or chronic kidney failure. Dialysis removes waste products and fluids from a patient's blood and vascular system.
While some dialysis techs enter the field with a high school diploma, acquiring essential skills on the job, many employers now prefer more highly qualified candidates with formal training from a dialysis technician training school. Attending a dialysis tech school will improve your job prospects and better prepare you for future certification (after 6 to 12 months of work experience).
Dialysis technician training programs are offered at community and junior colleges and technical institutes. Programs are usually 6 to 12 weeks long, featuring both classroom and hands-on clinical work. Graduates earn a certificate or technical diploma. Topics of study include principles of dialysis, anatomy and physiology of the kidney, dialysis systems and equipment, and complications of renal failure.
Dialysis technicians are encouraged to become certified. This will increase their value in the marketplace. There are three credentialing programs for dialysis technicians. Individuals can earn the Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician via the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (after six months of experience); the Certified Hemodialysis Technician (CHT) from The Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology (BONENT) after 12 months of experience; or the designation Certified in Clinical Nephrology Technology from The National Nephrology Certification Organization (NNCO) after six months of experience.
Qualified graduates of dialysis tech schools work in a variety of settings, including dialysis clinics, hospitals, private practices, and home dialysis programs. Their duties include dialysis preparation, treatment monitoring, and post-treatment assessment, among others. Dialysis technicians should be detail oriented and have an ability to emphasize with chronically ill patients.
Dialysis technicians and dialysis technologists are not the same. Technologists specialize in the technical operation of dialysis facilities, including the maintenance and repair of dialysis equipment.
