As an aviation maintenance technician, you may inspect aircraft parts and systems such as:

  • engines
  • landing gear
  • instrumentation
  • pressurized sections
  • brakes
  • valves
  • pumps
  • air-conditioning systems

Inspections take place following a strict schedule based on:

  • the number of flying hours
  • time elapsed since the last inspection

You may carry out necessary maintenance and replacement of the parts listed above so long as you are certified as an avionics repair specialist by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Aviation Maintenance Technician Certification

The FAA requires completion of a program at an FAA certified aviation maintenance technician school. If you apply for an aviation maintenance certification you must pass written and oral tests and demonstrate that you can understand and perform the necessary maintenance work.

Aviation Maintenance Technician Career Outlook

In spite of little or no growth in the airline industry, The Bureau of Labor expects job openings for trained aviation maintenance technicians to be excellent. This is due to a shortfall in the number of new graduates needed to meet employers' needs.

You may find most opportunities for aviation maintenance technician employment at major airports near large cities. You might find work as a civilian aviation technician employed by the U.S. Armed Forces at military installations.

If you are interested in aerospace, many manufacturing aerospace firms are located in California and Washington State. Another large employer is the FAA, which has facilities in Oklahoma City, Atlantic City, Wichita, and Washington DC. And employment opportunities abound at independent repair shops at or near airports in every part of the country.
