As a power plant mechanic, you would be authorized to work on engines and do limited work on propellers. As an airframe mechanic, you would be authorized to work on any part of the aircraft except the power plant, instruments, and propellers. You will need to be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to carry out either type of work. Many people take the opportunity to be trained and certified in both areas, thus the name: airframe and power plant.
Airframe and Power Plant Certification
To earn your airframe and power plant certifications, the FAA requires you to complete a program at an FAA certified airframe and power plant school. If you apply for either certification, you must also pass written and oral tests and demonstrate that you can understand and perform the work.
Airframe and Power Plant Technician Career Options
You can increase the opportunities available to you if you train to become a combination airframe and power plant mechanic (or A & P mechanic), rather than just training in one area or the other.
According to the Bureau of Labor, the majority of people working in this field have training in both areas and work on civilian aircraft; most airlines require that mechanics have a high school diploma and an airframe and power plant certificate. You can find other employment opportunities with:
- air transportation companies
- private maintenance and repair facilities
- the federal government
- aerospace products and parts manufacturing firms
- private companies that operate their own planes to transport executives and cargo
As you progress in your career, you may wish to consider becoming an inspector. To obtain an inspector's authorization, you must have held an airframe and power plant certificate for at least 3 years.
