In general, as an aircraft maintenance mechanic, you may inspect aircraft parts and systems such as:

  • engines
  • landing gear
  • instrumentation
  • brakes
  • valves
  • pressurized sections
  • pumps
  • electrical
  • fuel
  • air-conditioning

Inspections take place following a strict schedule based on:

  • the number of flying hours
  • time elapsed since the last inspection
  • a combination or both of the above

You may carry out necessary maintenance and replacement of these parts and systems.

Aircraft Mechanic Certification

To become an aircraft mechanic, The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires you to complete an aircraft maintenance program at an FAA certified aircraft mechanic school. To complete your aircraft certification, you must pass written and oral tests and demonstrate that you can understand and perform the necessary maintenance and repair work.

You will need to be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to specialize in one or more specific areas of work:

  • airframe
  • power plant
  • aircraft maintenance

To improve your employment opportunities you can earn a certification in all of these areas.

Aircraft Mechanic and Maintenance Career Outlook

The Bureau of Labor expects job opportunities to be good in spite of a decline in the airline industry due to September 11. The main reason for the strong demand is an aircraft mechanic shortage. There aren't enough aircraft mechanics and maintenance technicians graduating from aircraft mechanic schools to meet employers' needs.

Opportunities for aircraft maintenance mechanics can be found at:

  • major airports in large cities
  • a U.S. military installation (as a civilian mechanic)
  • a local or international airline
  • the Federal Government
  • firms with their own fleet offering cargo and transportation services

Companies need aircraft back in good working order as quickly as possible in order to make a profit. Expect to work shifts, and to work under time pressure.
