Diesel Technician School Overview
Now is a great time to become a diesel mechanic. As interstate commerce increases, and as car manufacturers focus technology efforts on using diesel engines for cars and light trucks, the demand for trained diesel technicians continues to grow. Diesel mechanic schools are where you'll learn the necessary skills to enter this thriving and rewarding part of the automotive repair industry.
Graduates of diesel tech schools will work on and repair diesel-powered vehicles and transportation equipment, which includes heavy trucks, buses, and locomotives, as well as tractors, combines, cranes and bulldozers. After two years of job experience, deisel technicians can receive voluntary certification by the ASE (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence).

Diesel Technician School Curriculum
Diesel mechanic school programs can last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on whether or not additional academic courses are required. Schools may offer both Associate of Applied Science Degree programs or a certificate program.
Diesel schools will teach you how to:
- inspect, diagnose, and repair diesel engines
- diagnose and repair chassis, transmission, hydraulic brake, rear carrier, and air brake systems
- gain supervisory and managerial skills to run your own business

- a fleet garage (owned by a trucking company or transportation department)
